As part of the Geopark Algarvensis Loulé-Silves-Albufeira project and its application to become a UNESCO World Geopark, the Municipality of Silves decided to focus on identifying and characterizing the most interesting biodiversity sites in the municipality of Silves.
Thus, based on knowledge and a preliminary assessment, areas were identified which, due to their particularities, biological diversity and state of conservation, have a high potential in terms of botany and birdlife, and therefore deserve to be better characterized and known. This characterization will make it possible to gather information that will enable them to be properly valued and subsequently promoted and conserved, in order to boost their scientific, educational and tourist use in the context of a sustainable development strategy integrated into the Algarvensis Geopark project.
The project has a duration of 16 months, with characterization work starting in September 2020 and due to be completed in February 2022.
