Coastal Dynamics
The stretch of coastline between Forte Novo and Garrão in the Algarve features golden sand beaches running from northwest to southeast, backed by reddish sandy cliffs. However, behind this picturesque landscape lies a concerning reality: this area experiences one of the highest rates of coastline retreat along the entire Algarve coast. Essentially, the sea is 'stealing' land at an alarming rate.
This retreat is attributed to intense coastal erosion caused by storms and the ongoing movement of waves that transport sediments along the coast. This process, known as longshore transport, primarily occurs from west to east throughout the year. A clear example of this transformation can be seen in Vale do Lobo, where a swimming pool built in 1980 at the top of the cliff overlooking the sea is now several meters closer to the water. It may seem as if the pool has moved forward on its own toward the ocean, but in reality, it is the cliff that has retreated.
To keep the pool operational and protect the area, several engineering measures have been implemented, including the construction of stone walls (rock armour) and replenishing sand on the beach (beach nourishment). This ongoing battle against the power of the sea requires constant efforts.
