The 1755 tsunami has been extensively studied on both land and the seabed along the Iberian Peninsula's coast, particularly in the Algarve region. These investigations, utilising a variety of methodologies, have helped identify the characteristics associated with tsunami deposits and recognise the different phases of these extreme and destructive events. These phases include the arrival of the giant wave, the subsequent coastal flooding, and the retreating waves that carry both continental and marine materials back to the sea. A sediment survey conducted in this area of the continental shelf has confirmed the presence of a deposit linked to the 1755 tsunami, as well as a more recent deposit associated with the 1969 tsunami.
